“New Vessels, Unmade Structures” by Artist Sapira Cheuk at Core Contemporary
The exhibition at Core Contemporary will include Artist Sapira Cheuk's newest works, produced within the first year of her relocation to Las Vegas, Nevada. The ink and paper installations and works on paper draw upon sources from both traditional Chinese art and Classical Greek sculpture. Together, they examine how notions of individual agency and external directives (cultural, economic, and aesthetic) work to shape the body, physically and metaphysically, and distort its ability to experience. Cheuk’s work revolves around issues of the body and embodiment. Her practice incorporates traditional Sumi Ink painting techniques and geometric elements to depict the complexity of the Subject, agency, and corporeality, while building an alternative narrative of not only bodily desires, but also intersubjective relations. Curated by gallery owner, Nancy Good, who states, “There is an aesthetic to Cheuk's work that conveys a certain dignity and grace. The contemporary finesse of her lines and brushstrokes do not disguise her classical understanding of the human form, though her shapes may completely obscure their origin upon first glance. And, I am particularly excited about the large site-specific paper installation that will be a major component of this exhibition.”
